在1937年的紐約，17歲的理查德·薩繆爾一心想當演員，十分厭煩學校的生活。一個巧合的機會，他遇到了舞臺導演奧遜·威爾斯，並加入了威爾斯導演的莎士比亞舞臺劇《尤利烏斯·愷撒》的排演。在劇組，他遇到了也對舞臺充滿渴望的桑妮亞。理查德愛上了桑妮亞，但當向她表白時，桑妮亞卻表示她願意跟威爾斯在一起。他終於察覺桑妮亞為了實現她的舞臺夢想而願意與威爾斯進行性交易。理查德與威爾斯大吵了一架，並被驅逐出劇團……
